Team Stories – Jellybean

Jellybean (S.McKenzie, J.Garden, M.Lechmann, R.MacDonald) 3100 points 7/10 teams in Rec-24 Prolog Who’s Bright Idea Was This? It seemed like a good idea at the time. 24 hours in the woods in April in Nova Scotia. What a great way to test the DNA – find its strengths and weaknesses – see first hand how our customers will use it – experience the frustration of a poor user interface. What more could we ask for? Then, the horror stories. Snowstorms. … Continue reading

Team Stories – Hammerheads

Hammerheads (T.Davis, R.Heimpel) 4400 points 8/12 teams in PC-24 To start, we both would like to thank the HRSAR and the volunteers who organized and put this race on. Hats off to the volunteers, especially the lonely water station in the south end of the watershed. Saturday 27 April arrived and it was a beautiful day for being in the woods – overcast, +7C, slight breeze and, being late April, no black flies. We arrived at 10:30 AM at the … Continue reading

Team Stories – Ex-Piercey’s Adventure League

Ex-Pierceys Adventure League (M.Hogg, P.Garnhum, K.Griffon, D.MacDonald) 4100 points 2/10 teams in Rec-24 What better way to wind up for another hiking season than to dive in head first. This year was the second time that Kris, Peter, Dave and I participated in the Eco-Endurance Challenge organized by the Halifax Regional Search & Rescue. We’re given more than 100 square kilometres sprinkled with 40 control points and only 24 hours to find as many as we can. Unfortunately we didn’t … Continue reading

Team Stories – Dumb ‘n’ Dumber

Dumb n’Dumber (C.Saunders, P.Chouinard) 2150 points 1/4 teams in Mountain Bike The weather was as good as it will ever get during the month of April in Nova Scotia. It was mainly sunny, about 8°C (but the wind made it feel about 1°C). Pulling up to the start line, Team Dumb n’ Dumber (Chris Saunders and Pierre Chouinard – respectively) were definitely the odd team out. Not only were we the only team riding full suspension bikes, but we were … Continue reading

Team Stories – Bog People

Bog People (R.Hughes, A.Whaley) 4500 points 7/12 teams in PC-24 Alex and I came into this event having previously competed in two rogaines, but no experience in this specific region. We also came in moderately unfit. We x-c skiied quite a bit over winter. This is not necessarily the best preparation, although maybe better than nothing. Our goals were to navigate successfully, and to maximise our score while remaining in good shape mentally. In the last rogaine we pushed too … Continue reading

Team Stories – Smith & Smith

Smith & Smith (W.Smith, M.Smith) 2600 points PC-6 hour Eco-Endurance Challenge 2001 Point 1 – wet, wet, WET. Caught much of the field here – people were actually sitting on the ground drying out their boots. Deep water, but we realized that staying dry was not an option, so we just carried on, walking ourselves dry as we went. Point #14 – entered woods a bit early, but lost only a few minutes in total. Point #13 – approached from … Continue reading
