HRSAR garage fire

January 08, 2013

As some of you may have heard, on Friday January 4th there was a fire at the Halifax Regional Search and Rescue base. We are sorry to say that our trusty Suburban, which we used to transport searchers at missing person events and tow our equipment, developed some kind of fault in the engine bay and was completely engulfed in flames. The garage in which we also house our command and logistics vehicles was badly damaged by smoke and will need a significant overhaul including new gyproc and a number of doors; the command vehicle suffered some warping of the side panels, melting of wiring and lights, and smoke damage to the roof/antenna and cab. The logistics vehicle was luckily untouched other than being covered in soot and suffering contamination of the air conditioning system. The situation could have been much worse – thankfully no-one was injured.

It is early days in the insurance and recovery process but we have been left without a team transport vehicle and at some point we will have to purchase a replacement. As a result this year, more than ever, it is important for us to make the E2C as successful as possible! This is our major fundraiser for the team and we would encourage everyone who has found themselves thinking,”maybe next year…” to make 2013 the time to try the event for the first time.

Please note: due to rising materials costs and the recent fire at our search base, we will not be providing technical t-shirts to all racers this year. Instead, the first 100 participants to sign up for the race will receive a technical t-shirt; all other t-shirts will be regular cotton.
